MODERN BRUSH CALLIGRAPHY with Rebecca Norman, Thursday 21st February 2.00-4.30pm, $35 

Rebecca Norman of Panoply Studio is a calligraphy artist based in Hastings. She is currently working on setting up a retail and workshop studio in Hastings and is well known for her work on many of the display signs around Hawkes Bay as well as the go-to person for hand lettered menus and wedding decor. Rebecca learnt traditional calligraphy from her grandfather and her work ranges from traditional hand-lettered fonts to modern chalkboard design. In this workshop Rebecca will introduce you to the fun technique of brush calligraphy, enabling you to develop your own unique style of brush script.

POP CULTURE GRAPHIC DESIGN with Grimoire, Thursday 21st February 5.30-8.00pm, $35 

Hayden aka Grimoire creates imaginative imagery derived from aspects of popular culture such as comics,  sci-fi, vintage action figures and horror movies. His work includes drawing, digital painting, band posters and tattoo design. Hayden is skilled at designing by hand or using digital processes with Procreate. This is looking to be a really fun and creative workshop - join Hayden as he introduces you to his process and takes you through a project to design a black and white t-shirt graphic or another idea of your choice!

CONTEMPORARY CERAMICS with Laura Pearce, Saturday 23rd February 10.00am-12.30pm, $40 (includes firing fee)

Laura Pearce (BDes, B.Ed) is a Napier based potter and designer whose hand-thrown work features delicate abstract designs with a focus on modern colour and pattern. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to tangibly experience some of the ceramics from Laura’s collection of NZ artwork, before taking part in a practical workshop to make your own ceramic piece. Laura is a fantastic teacher who can help you discover and embrace your own style. (Clay work will be fired and available to pick up from The Pencil Room at a later date once Laura has fired it for you).

SCULPTURE with Ben Pearce, Saturday 23rd February 2.00-4.30pm, $35

Ben Pearce (BFA) uses wood, metal and found objects to create sculpture that explores concepts of time and memory. Join Ben as he discusses the themes inherent in his work and takes you through a practical workshop to build a maquette (preparation model for a sculpture). This is one workshop I am personally looking forward to - Ben has such a fine sensibility for materials and design and it is a rare opportunity to have him run a workshop at The Pencil Room - dont miss it!

CONTEMPORARY TEXTILE ART with Ngaio Blackwood, Sunday 24th February 10.00am-12.30pm, $35

Ngaio Blackwood (BFA) is a contemporary textile artist from Hawkes Bay. Her work combines watercolour, drawing and stitching on canvas and references the incongruous traditions of embroidery and abstract painting. Ngaio's work is currently on show at The Rabbit Room gallery on Hastings Street in Napier. Join Ngaio as she presents her current work and introduces you to creative embroidery techniques using stitch and paint. Produce your own sample booklet of traditional and experimental stitch based processes.

LANDSCAPE PAINTING with John Eaden, Sunday 24th February 2.00-4.30pm, $40 (includes materials)

Not your average landscape painting workshop, in this one John will take you through a creative process to develop a landscape before painting it with acrylics. John Eaden is a local artist who demonstrates a contemporary approach to landscape painting while also referencing European and New Zealand art traditions. In this workshop John will discuss some of his personal favourite paintings and take students through an acrylic landscape painting project. Materials are provided though you may wish to bring your own preferred brushes/paints.
